CHALLENGE
The challenge of refurbishing a walkway reaching the end of its service life while minimizing disruption to the environment and ensuring cost-effectiveness is indeed significant, especially when working over water with its inherent risks. The dynamic nature of open water introduces unpredictable weather conditions, adding complexity to the task.
SOLUTION
Surface preparation was a crucial aspect of the refurbishment process to ensure the longevity of the structure. Mechanically cleaning surfaces using a needle gun and scabbler effectively removed heavy corrosion. Bristle blasting helped provide an anchor profile, also providing a clean surface for the application of Chemco International coatings.
SCOPE
- Single coat of RS500P to achieve a thickness of 100μm
- Corners, edges, and welds were addressed by stripe coating them using RA 500M
- An additional coat of RA 500M was applied to achieve DFT of 600μm
OUTCOME
By implementing this solution, the asset owner achieved a medium-term life extension for the walkway with minimal disruption to the environment and a cost-effective approach. The structure is now better equipped to withstand the challenges posed by its environment, ensuring continued functionality and safety for years to come.
