Stern Tube Life Extension During Half-life Refit

Overview: The half-life refit of critical components on ocean going vessels ensures fail safe operations while the pacific class patrol boats are guarding our shores.  The appointed Quality Assurance team were pleased with the results considering the pitting corrosion and erosion the internal surfaces were found in.

Application of RB364

INDUSTRY

ENVIRONMENT

Ambient Sea water at times travelling in shallow waters picking up sand

SUBSTRATE

Carbon Steel

CHALLENGE

Pit filling severely corroded small (170mm) diameter long (2600mm) tube, working inside the engine room with only the transmission removed, the access is tight.

SCOPE

Repeated abrasive blast and hot wash using a hollow tip nozzle to remove all signs of corrosion.

Apply 3 coats of Chem-tect™ RB 364 by brush and specially designed trowel, enabling pits to be filled

Quality assurance is carried out

OUTCOME

The stern tubes were successfully restored, with all signs of corrosion and erosion eliminated. The application of RB 364 provided superior adhesion and ensured long-term protection in demanding marine environments. The client’s quality assurance team expressed satisfaction with the results, ensuring the vessels could resume operations safely. This project demonstrates Chemcote’s capability to deliver effective solutions for complex marine coating challenges, ensuring the durability and performance of critical vessel components.
