OVERVIEW: The Chemical Manufacturing Client approached us to provide a remedial solution on their Acetic Acid Concrete Bund. We applied a tough, impermeable barrier for severe chemical acid resistance ensuring protection from long term exposure to acid, extreme weather conditions and constant wear and tear
INDUSTRY
ENVIRONMENT
Concentrated Acetic Acid
SUBSTRATE
Acetic Acid Concrete Bund
CHALLENGE
The concrete floor of the acetic acid bund had not been coated. There had been substantial corrosive damage to the concrete from acetic acid. Most of the top 50mm of concrete had been eaten away, exposing the aggregate.
The acetic acid bund required protection against corrosion from long-term exposure to acid, protection against the damaging effect of the weather and needed to be suitable for heavy foot traffic.
SOLUTION
To achieve maximum coating life, the RB 300 system with glassflake-filled vinyl ester was used. RB 300 has a tough impermeable barrier for severe chemical acid resistance ensuring protection from long term exposure to acid, extreme weather conditions and constant wear and tear. Polymer concrete was used to replace the missing concrete.
SCOPE
The concrete surface was subjected to water and abrasive blasting to clean it thus removing waste and loose concrete
Surface areas that indicated severe structural integrity losses were replaced with polymer concrete
RB 364 was applied by Airless Spray to nominated areas
Quality was checked and repaired areas retested
PRODUCTS
OUTCOME
The coating of the acetic acid bund was completed on time and to budget. Recommendations included a visual inspection by Chemcote after 12 months. The Client was pleased with the result and the service.
