OVERVIEW: Chemcote were enlisted to carry out exploratory cleaning and pH neutralisation on these fibreglass pods. We assessed the fibreglass’ structural suitability to remain in service and carried out repairs to extend the life of the lining for another 10 years
INDUSTRY
ENVIRONMENT
Ferric Chloride & 33% Hydrochloric Acid
SUBSTRATE
Fibreglass tanks
CHALLENGE
The pods have been in service for 25-30 years and have been re-lined by a reputable fibreglass tank manufacturer around 10-12 years prior. The pods have predominantly carried ferric/HCL for most of their life. There were osmosis blisters in the applied lining and surface cracking allowing the fibreglass structure to be exposed to the stored acid.
SOLUTION
Carry out exploratory cleaning and pH neutralisation ensuring the fibreglass is not beyond its structural ability to remain in service for another 10 years. Removing the internal lining by scrapping/grinding and abrasive blasting. Hot washing is also recommended to open up the pores and assist in the pH neutralisation process.
SCOPE
Removed Fibreglass from around roll-over combing and bands around the circumference
Chip away the failed internal coating
Assess corrosion damage to steel work and internal shell
Heat internals of tank to assist with leaching process
Whip abrasive blasted internals and hot wash to release contaminants
600 multi directional matting & RB 300 series on to damaged areas
1st coat of RB 300 on entire surface
Application of 1000µm of RB 332 to pipe internals
Application of 2 veil coats of RB 300
Hot wash/sand externals to assist in the removal of wax as best as possible
PRODUCTS
OUTCOME
Using the RB 300 series for Fibreglass Tank internal lining will provided 10 years protection
